In March 2005
we started to build the first bipedal robots to investigate walking and running based on biological design and control principles. Furthermore, we installed a circular treadmill table making the analysis of robot movements much easier.

Since September 2004
we have a new treadmill specially designed to measure 3D ground reaction forces during both walking and running. The forces can be separated between left and right foot.

Earlier
in 2004 we started to build a series of very simple legged robots to investigate the influence of leg design on the control for stable locomotion. In contrast to computer simulation, the physical contact with the environment and the properties of the actuator become now important for obtaining periodic movement patterns.

LAB STORY
The Locomotion Lab is a young investigator group supported by the German Science Foundation (DFG) within the framework of the Emmy-Noether program. It was founded in October 2003 by Andre Seyfarth and follows the traditions in biomechanics and movement science in Jena. more...

RESEARCH FOCUS
In our research we aim to achieve a better understanding on the way how humans and animals move (e.g. run or walk). Based on such knowledge we try to identify general principles which could then be used to improve therapeutical or technical approaches, for instance in rehabilitation or robotics.
